To examine the oral cavity anatomically Explore variations in anatomical structures Study embryological foundations to the lingual frenulum Increase your knowledge base around tongue-tie and its potential impact on infant feeding. Quiz 1 Module 2: Implications of Untreated Oral Ties In module 2 we explore the wider impact and longer term health considerations associated with untreated oral ties. A brief history of tongue-tie treatment, and its impact on health. Understanding the difference between a tongue-tie as a normal anatomical structure and a tongue-tie restriction. Delve into embryology and look at stages of lingual frenulum development. Explore the impact on physical health, particularly in relation to: Digestions and feeding ability, Sleep, Speech, Breathing, Orofacial growth, Posture. Holistic health concerns: Emotional, Social, Financial Common misunderstandings and myth-busting. Quiz 2 Module 3: Oral Assessment & Tools Awareness This module concentrates on the assessment process, learning about and acknowledging the different tools available and the importance of 'differential diagnosis' When is the 'right' time to consider a frenulotomy procedure? How to choose an approved &/or preferred tongue-tie practitioner. Acknowledging there is a difference between a visual oral assessment and a functional motility exam, and who is qualified to perform this. Anatomical variations of the oral cavity. Differential diagnosis-Could it be something else? Exploring what is meant by the term 'faux tie' An overview of some of the assessment tools used globally: Assessment Tool for Lingual Frenulum Function, Coryllos Classification tool, Tongue-tie and Breastfed Baby Assessment Tool, Kotlow Classification of Ankyloglossia, Martinelli Neonatal Tongue Screening Tool, Bristol Tongue Assessment Tool. Quiz 3 Module 4: Body Therapies & Interdisciplinary Support This module addresses how body-therapies may help influence adverse feeding behaviours, that may have been caused by a tongue-tie restriction or differential diagnosis. What is body-therapy? How can body-therapies help infants? The different types of body-therapies available. Revisiting Fascial anatomy and its importance in optimal tongue function. Longer term benefits of body-therapies, revisiting: Sleep, Digestion and swallow, Speech, Breathing, Orofacial growth, Posture. Homebased supportive techniques to strengthen and relax bodily tensions. Quiz 4 Module 5: Risks of Surgical Procedures This module looks at the known risks associated with infant frenulotomy procedures for families to consider in advance of undergoing a surgical release. It also provides an awareness to different techniques or instruments that providers may use and also discusses conservative management of feeding symptoms in the absence of surgery. Methods of a ankyloglossia surgical release. Who to refer to provide tongue-tie surgical release. Conservative management options to support infant feeding. Risks of the procedure: Pain, Infection, Bleeding, Oral injury to surrounding oral structures, Oral aversion and decline in feeding ability, Reformation / Re-occurence, Incomplete surgical release, Poor response to frenulotomy, or nil improvement, Thermal injury (lasers). Quiz 5 Module 6: Aftercare & Long-Term Management This module looks at how and what you may do to support families in the weeks following their procedure. Aftercare management, exercises, and supportive techniques. Stages of normal wound healing.
