D-Restricted Ltd:®

 Professional Lactation Support

As a qualified lactation consultant (IBCLC-International Board Certified Lactation Consultant), I am able to offer professional, and personalised lactation support for you and your child.  This is tailored to your individual feeding needs and goals, and is held at my home clinic, to ensure a comfortable, and safe environment.

This appointment will involve an initial medical, birthing and feeding history taking, and feeding assessment (which will include observation of a full feed).  Whilst assessing the feeding challenges, I will be able to support and guide you to addressing these and putting measures in place to overcome and resolve them where able.

I also offer antenatal discussions with parents at the benefits and expectations for infant feeding.  This may include discussion around those first precious hours feeding, feeding positions and latch techniques.

My experience in lactation as a specialism is widely varied, and has been both a professional and personal journey. You may have already read about my personal feeding struggles with regards to tongue-tie in the 'About Me' section, this is what drove me into developing professionally into the world that is infant feeding.

Since 2013, I have been trained as a 'Mother-Supporter', and 'Breastfeeding Counsellor' with the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers.  During this period I offered my skills to support mothers as a volunteer at weekly support groups, and also took calls on the National Breastfeeding Helpline 0300 100 0212 (and still do!). I then progressed my knowledge in further training as a lactation Specialist (LEARCC approved) and then as a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)-which is the highest qualification, globally recognised in lactation. This training is also alongside my Neonatal Nursing specialism, and Tongue-tie assessment and division training.

Local Breastfeeding Support Groups

Local breastfeeding support groups are a great way to get both professional advice, suggestions and support by people that are and have been going through what you are too, or just for a chat in friendly surroundings.

Groups tend to be a drop-in service, with no appointment necessary.  Some are free of charge and donations are welcomed as refreshments tend to be provided from the personal pockets of the volunteers providing the venue and support.  Many also have facebook pages too, so definitely are worth a look!

Many Local Authorities also provide infant feeding support, and contact details can be found on local council websites, children’s Sure-Start Centres or your local post-natal hospital ward.  Advice may also be sought from your GP, Health Visitor or Community Midwife.

There are also infant feeding support charities such as NCT (National Childbirth Trust), ABM (Association of breastfeeding Mothers), BfN (breastfeeding network) and LLLi (La Leche League International) who provide support via their helplines, websites or any of their local support groups also.  The most up to date times and dates are found on their websites, and provide professional support by either qualified breastfeeding counsellors or peer supporters who have received training to help support mothers throughout their infant feeding journey.
