Infant tongue-tie, also known as ankyloglossia, describes a variation in the lingual frenulum that may affect tongue movement and function in some infants.
A function-based approach considers more than anatomy alone. Understanding infant tongue-tie requires consideration of tongue movement, oral skills, feeding abilities, compensatory patterns and the wider clinical picture, including the infant–caregiver feeding dyad.

This programme has been developed by Diana Warren, Registered General Nurse (RGN), International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and founder of D-Restricted Ltd®, a specialist infant feeding and tongue-tie service.
Drawing on neonatal nursing experience, specialist infant feeding practice and extensive clinical experience supporting infants and families, Diana brings together evidence-informed education with a function-based approach to infant tongue-tie.

Develop an understanding of the relevant anatomy and physiology of oral structures, including the tongue, oral cavity and surrounding structures, and their role in infant feeding function.
Module 2: Potential Impact of Oral Ties and Functional Considerations Over Time
Consider the potential relationship between oral ties, function and feeding experiences over time, recognising individual variation and the wider clinical picture.
Module 3: Tongue Function Assessment Tools and Differential Diagnosis

Assessment and completion requirements
To successfully complete the programme, participants are required to:
✔ Complete all six module quizzes, achieving a minimum pass mark of 80% for each assessment.
✔ Submit one reflective case study using the optional template provided. This encourages participants to reflect on a patient journey, considering the feeding experience holistically from initial contact, assessment considerations, potential treatment options, referral pathways, follow-up care and ongoing support for the infant, mother and wider family network.
On successful completion of all required elements, participants receive a Certificate of Online Attendance and a Certificate of Accreditation.
