What is tongue-tie?

Tongue-tie, also known as ankyloglossia, describes variation in the lingual frenulum that may restrict tongue movement. The frenulum develops as part of normal oral development, but differences in its structure, attachment and flexibility may influence tongue mobility.

Not all infants with a tongue-tie experience difficulties, and not all require intervention. Clinical decision-making requires consideration of the infant’s function, feeding experience, symptoms and individual circumstances.
