About Diana Warren:
Diana Warren, RGN, IBCLC
Specialist Infant Tongue-tie Clinician
Founder of D-Restricted Ltd® and Tongue-tie School
With a healthcare career spanning more than two decades, I combine extensive clinical experience with a compassionate approach to supporting babies, families and caregivers experiencing infant feeding challenges.
My specialist interests include infant feeding, tongue-tie assessment and division, oral function, expressing support and professional education. I am passionate about ensuring tongue-tie care extends beyond identifying anatomy alone, recognising the importance of function, feeding impact and skilled support throughout the feeding experience.
My Clinical Journey
My healthcare journey began in 1999, where I developed experience supporting adults and children across a range of clinical settings. These early experiences provided a strong foundation in holistic assessment, communication and supporting individuals and families through complex health challenges.
In 2014, my career moved into neonatal nursing, where I developed a specialist interest in infant feeding and the early stages of infant development. Working alongside babies and families during this important period highlighted the significant impact feeding difficulties can have, and the importance of skilled, compassionate support.
This experience led me to further specialise in infant feeding, completing my International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) qualification in 2019 and continuing to develop my knowledge in infant oral function, tongue-tie assessment and related areas.
Today, I combine my background in nursing, neonatal care, lactation and Specialist tongue-tie practice to provide comprehensive assessment and support for infants, families and caregivers, while also educating healthcare professionals through Tongue-tie School.
My clinical journey continues to be guided by the belief that effective infant feeding support requires looking at the whole picture: the baby, the feeding experience, the family and the wider factors that may influence function.
My Feeding Journey
My path into infant feeding and tongue-tie care has been shaped by both professional experience and personal understanding.
My own experiences as a mother of two daughters with tongue-ties became a catalyst in my specialist practice. Experiencing first-hand the uncertainty, questions and challenges that can surround infant feeding difficulties gave me a deeper understanding of how important it is for families and caregivers to feel listened to, receive balanced information and have access to knowledgeable, compassionate support.
This experience influenced the direction of my career, leading me to further specialise in infant feeding and tongue-tie care. However, my personal experience is only one part of my approach. My clinical knowledge has been developed through my nursing background, neonatal experience, specialist qualifications and ongoing professional development, allowing me to combine personal insight with evidence-informed clinical practice.
I recognise that every family’s experience is unique. My own experiences allow me to appreciate the emotional side of seeking support, while my professional training guides my assessment, clinical reasoning and care.
This combination of personal understanding and specialist expertise shapes the way I work today: taking time to understand each individual baby and family, looking beyond a single finding, and recognising the wider factors that can influence feeding.
My Approach to Tongue-tie Care
Tongue-tie care is about much more than identifying anatomy. While the appearance of the lingual frenulum provides information, it is function that provides context.
My approach is centred around understanding how an infant’s oral function may influence feeding, rather than making decisions based on appearance alone or on a diagnosis made without appropriate assessment and clinical training.
A tongue-tie assessment should consider the whole picture: the infant, the feeding experience, oral function, compensatory patterns and any other factors that may contribute to feeding challenges.
As an IBCLC and Specialist tongue-tie clinician, I recognise that skilled infant feeding support is an essential part of care. A frenotomy procedure, when clinically appropriate, is only one part of the wider feeding journey and should be supported by appropriate assessment, preparation and aftercare.
I am passionate about moving beyond anatomy alone and helping both families and healthcare professionals understand the importance of functional assessment, clinical reasoning and individualised care.
Specialist Practice and Professional Education
Alongside my clinical work supporting babies, families and caregivers, I am passionate about improving understanding and standards within infant feeding and tongue-tie care.
Through D-Restricted Ltd®, I provide Specialist tongue-tie assessment and division services, alongside comprehensive infant feeding support. My approach recognises that tongue-tie care is not simply a procedure; it requires skilled assessment, consideration of infant function and appropriate support before and after any intervention.
I am the founder of Tongue-tie School, an accredited professional education programme designed to support healthcare professionals in developing their understanding of tongue-tie, infant feeding, oral function and the wider considerations involved in supporting infants and families.
The course reflects my belief that healthcare professionals bring valuable experience from their own areas of practice, while also recognising the importance of appropriate education, clinical reasoning and understanding the limits of individual roles when supporting families.
I am also a Trustee of the Association of Tongue-tie Practitioners (ATP), contributing to the development and promotion of professional standards within tongue-tie practice.
My ongoing work includes developing resources and assessment approaches that support structured clinical thinking and help clinicians consider the wider functional picture, while recognising the importance of continued research and evidence development within this evolving area.
Infant Feeding Support
Alongside my Specialist tongue-tie work, I provide comprehensive infant feeding support as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
I support babies, families and caregivers experiencing a wide range of feeding challenges, including breastfeeding difficulties, bottle feeding support, expressing and pumping guidance, and concerns relating to oral function and feeding skills.
My support is available throughout the feeding experience, from the early days of establishing feeding through to natural term weaning. I recognise that feeding challenges are often multifactorial, and that understanding the individual baby, their feeding patterns and the wider circumstances is essential when developing an appropriate plan.
I offer families access to a dedicated, password-protected support area alongside a communication platform, allowing ongoing support and guidance beyond an individual appointment.
I am also qualified in breast pump flange fitting and am listed on the Babies in Common Flange Fitting Directory. Through personalised flange fitting assessments, I support expressing families to optimise comfort, fit and effective milk removal while using breast pumps.
In addition to individual support, I run a free weekly infant feeding support group in Leicestershire during term time, providing a welcoming space where families can connect, ask questions and access ongoing support. Donations towards refreshments are appreciated.
Quality, Regulation and Professional Standards
D-Restricted Ltd® is a regulated healthcare service, registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in England.
Following inspection, my clinical service achieved an overall rating of Outstanding from the CQC. This recognition reflects the commitment to safe, effective, responsive and compassionate care that underpins every aspect of my practice.
I am proud to be recognised as the first Specialist tongue-tie clinician in England to achieve an overall Outstanding CQC rating following inspection.
Alongside regulatory standards, I maintain professional accountability through my registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), my certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and my involvement with professional organisations including the Association of Tongue-tie Practitioners (ATP).
I am committed to continual learning, reflective practice and contributing to the development of high standards within infant feeding and tongue-tie care.
Supporting Families and Building Community
Supporting families has always been at the heart of my work. Over the years, D-Restricted Ltd® has developed a trusted reputation for providing Specialist infant feeding and tongue-tie support that combines clinical expertise with compassionate, individualised care.
Since establishing my service, I have supported many families through personal recommendations, professional referrals and ongoing community connections. I believe that families benefit not only from skilled assessment and clinical support, but also from feeling heard, understood and supported throughout their experience.
My weekly infant feeding support group in Leicestershire, available during term time, provides a welcoming space for families to connect, ask questions and access ongoing support. The group is free to attend, with donations towards refreshments appreciated.
Through my dedicated password-protected support area and communication platform, I continue to provide families with guidance beyond individual appointments, recognising that effective support often requires continuity, connection and reassurance.
The experiences of the families I support are central to everything I do. I am grateful for the feedback and kind words shared by families who have accessed my support, and these reflections provide insight into the individual experiences of those I have worked alongside.
You can read feedback from families I have supported on my Reviews Page.
A Whole Infant Approach
Every baby is unique, and feeding difficulties are rarely explained by one factor alone. My approach considers the whole infant and the wider feeding experience, recognising the complex relationship between oral function, feeding skills, regulation, comfort and the individual needs of each baby and family.
While anatomy can provide important information, it is function that provides the context. Understanding how an infant uses their oral structures during feeding, rather than focusing on appearance alone, is essential when considering feeding challenges and appropriate support.
“The question is not simply whether a frenulum is present, but how an infant is functioning and whether feeding is being affected.”
I believe effective support requires looking beyond a single finding and considering the bigger picture, including infant behaviour, feeding patterns, oral function, body tension and tone, and other factors that may influence feeding.
Through ongoing professional development, including further specialist training in infant body therapy approaches, I continue to expand my understanding of how physical factors may contribute to feeding challenges and how infants can be supported as a whole.
This whole infant approach underpins both my clinical practice and my professional education, helping families and healthcare professionals move beyond anatomy alone and towards a more informed understanding of infant feeding and function.
